April Crews Lake Camp
April 23-25, 2022
Crews Lake Wilderness Park is a 113-acre park on the west shore of Crews Lake in north-central Pasco County, along the Suncoast Parkway. The lake is the source of the Pithlachascotee River, which flows 25 miles south into the Gulf of Mexico.
After the short ride to camp, we unpacked our tents and looked around the camp. The site was at an intersection of multiple hike paths, which were being hiked by a multitude of people that night. Each patrol ate cracker barrel, then had patrol time until lights out at 10 PM.
After the patrols woke up, we ate breakfast and started our morning activity – cleaning the park. We found a wide variety of things, such as:
- A fence
- An air conditioning unit
- Car parts
- Roof shingles
- Car parts
- A carpet that a colony of giant ants lived on
- A jelly jar
- Dozens of beer bottles/cans
So that was fun.
After our lunch, we went to Crews Lake’s Earth Day Celebration where there was a truck that shredded paper, food carts, and a bubble machine. Afterward, we went on the train. The train was made for kids about seven years old, but it was still a very fun ride for the troop. After the ride, we went back to camp and started dinner. There was a competition (Sons of Liberty won) and had some vibe time before the dessert Iron Chef competition. There were 16 items on the table, and the patrols picked names out of a hat and chose numbers representing the order we went in. It was a snake draft, meaning that it went 1, 2, 3, 4, and then 4, 3, 2, 1. After each patrol had chosen their four items, we cooked them into a dessert and they were judged. (Moose Patrol won this competition). We then went to bed and did our usual pack-up routine.
